The way i convert photo's to b&w comes very close. It's quicker to i guess. I use the gradient tool in photoshop.

Here's how its done:

I like both versions!! (:

After over 3 decades in photography learning digital processing has been quite challenging. Some elements of processing that was so easy to me seem so much harder digitally. 'Course I guess after so many years in the darkroom it became almost second nature. Now what were easy manipulations seem quite difficult. As you mentioned in your article, I too, have been dissapointed with alot of results of digital b+w. Many just don't have the punch, impact, or the richness of depth I used to achieve when making a fine silver print. The channel mixing segment was quite helpful, especially the settings for certain film types. Thanks for the infrared too. I still miss my darkroom and the smell of fixer though!!

P. S.
- - By the way, Illford is now putting out some pricey printing papers that supposedly emulate the results and characteristics of their high end black and white photographic art papers. Have you tried them yet? I'm sure that would make for another very interesting tutorial . . .

What? Why wouldn't you just go "Image --> Mode --> Greyscale", then mess with the Levels instead? I don't get it.
