Painting over technique

posted by sinoreport, Aug 5, 2008 1:10 AM — 0 comments

Jedes Foto ist ein getoeteter Augenblick[/p] Every photo is a moment killed. An insect of time, dissected and spiked. Botho Strauss is not a huge fan of snapshots which he calls a 'false presence' which does not really help recovering the memory of a moment. Insignificant and petty are the snapshots of our daily lives, yet we hesitate to delete and destroy them out of the archaic fear of destroying the soul. Gerhard Richter used a technique to cover snapshots with left-over-paint, thick layers which leave part of the original photo visible. Verfremdung. Strauss calls this the 'Combine' which unites original and painting inseparately.

Strauss in Der Spiegel, 30/2008, p144-45
