We should all leave more comments...

posted by nocturna, Jan 4, 2006 1:05 PM — 17 comments

All users of sxc should leave more comments when they download an image. It's the only way to understand if the pictures are actually appreciated or useful or any good.

It's incredible to see images downloaded more than 50 times without one single comment. Could it be no one had the time to write a line?

I have started to leave a note for every picture i download, even just a tiny "thank you" to let the person know I am actually interested in their work, not just in free pictures to download....

And more votes also. :)
In my case, the users left a comment every 171 downloads.
I've made an humor photo on the subject:

this is hilarious! i love the image :)

a comment out of 171 downloads? wow... i understand sxc users are good with images and not so much with words, but that's really too much!

isn't a comment all we ask back in exchange of the free photographs? :>

The downloads count can give also some satisfactions.
The problem is: if you want to have a huge download count you must upload only "useful" photos.
The "artistic" pictures don't pay your efforts in a stock photos site.
Before to download your picture you must think: "is this a picture that can be useful in a graphic layout"?.
I'm impressed from my picture named "Old sheet of paper", it's the most downloaded photo in this site, and it's a very banal subject. In my mind it isn't a subject to be proud.
My preferred pictures have a low download count.
Looking at the download results, I think: "if your picture is made to allow the users to write something on it... a high download count is guaranteed". :)

"Before to upload", not "Before to download". Sorry...

I've done a look to your latest photos. Now you have comments! And a very good download count also! My compliments. :)

I try to vote on images if I download them, but I don't always have time to leave a comment. However, if I end up using an image for something, I always make an effort to go back and comment on that image, telling the user what I've done with their photo.

hi Buneater, i know time is an issue when looking for/downloading images here on sxc, but already giving a vote is a good thing. an especially going back to leave a comment when you use the image is perfectly ok.
but i realize only the minority of us do it....

hey brokenarts, your theory is correct, i followed your expert advice and indeed my brown paper envelope (just a scan!) is very appreciated or at least downloaded - btw, i gave you credits and tried to link you in the description but didn't manage to...

Hi, nocturna, thank you for your comments! :-) SXC makes much more fun with feedback...

Hi, nocturna. Keep the good work! Try to take shots of other objects!
You can make your objects pictures more interesting adding something creative. For example: the brown envelope is good, but a shot of one hand holding an envelope is better.
Other ideas: a stack of envelopes; an envelope with a slipped sheet of white paper; an envelope in a trash bin; an envelope with a big label... and so on :)
Maybe you can think that a simple object is a "humble" subject, but for sxc users it can be more "useful" than other "artistic" shots.
And... important... always make a white background! :)

Another hint. Don't place usage restrictions in your photos. It's useless and I think that the spirit of sxc it's the free exchange of works.
A very little percentage of sxc users will send you a copy of the final work or will ask you for permissions, but I don't think that a restriction can increase this percentage.
