The Next Step : Art Techniques

posted by ugaldew, May 15, 2006 11:39 PM — 34 comments

This tutorial will guide you with visual steps through the creation of your own art work with the technique of “blending layers” in Photoshop . . I will develop step by step by step my own art work using SXC stock so you can repeat or develop the process with your own pics and your creativity , I’m using Photoshop CS2 but you can work in older versions

This process is really simple with easy steps and it shouldn’t take you more than 12 minutes

EXAMPLE 1 (this is the most elaborated one )

Download this practice's PDF file (2.2MB)

This is the stock I blended

Download them at SXC

EYE - colorful eye 9 by veave_pl
Texture 1 - Green by Leonbidon
Texture 2 - Textures by 02design
Texture 3 - Collage by Baltar

>> Step1
Open your main image in PS , and turn it B/W , (Image/Adjustment/Desaturate )

>> Step2
Add the first texture to the palette , ( open the image and drag it into your palette or copy paste it )

>> Step3
Change the blend mode to multiply or anyone you like , each blending mode is has different effects , you should check them all out ,

So far it looks like this

>> Step4
Add a mask to the Layer 2 to clear up the iris and white surface , to get better effect it is better to use the soft brush and keep the opacity low so your mask get softer

>> Step5

Repeat Step 2 3 4 but using now textures 23 and rename the layers to Texture 1 , 2 ,3 etc

It should look like this so far :

>> Step6

I want to add some color to the iris so , Open the eye picture again and crop a square enclosing the iris , paste it in your palette and make it match with the original iris , (this is easier than it looks) , then erase with the soft brush the edges and play with the (image/adjust/brightness contrast) and (image/adjust/color balance ) so you get your desired tones

this one is much more easier , within 3 minutes max !!!

Download this practice's PSD file (1.2MB)

Download them at SXC

Girl - Flowers by Wolak
Texture 1 - Textures by 02design
Texture 2 - Wall decay by n_yfe

1.-Open texture 1
2.-Add texture 2 to your palette and Blend it mode : Multiply
3.-Add Girl pic to your palette and blend it mode : Multiply

4.-Play with the colors of the girl layer( image / adjust / color balance ) I added a bit of green and VUALA !!!!

Your imagination is the limit now ... old style pics , futuristic pics , cool textures , awsome enviroments , etc etc ....

I Hope you have enjoyed this Tutorial Im sorry if you find some misuses of language ,in case you did please let me know

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. For while Knowledge tells us all that we know, our imagination show all that we have yet to discover.

thanks for giving me the knowledge to open my imagination up a little more.

thanks for the cool tut!

This a really great tutorial. But I cant get my second picture into my first layers box. I have tried copying, and I've also tried the dragging. But yet it wont work. And suggestions?

Dear 1303, try making a copy of the background layer of your second picture. It will read background copy. Drag the background copy into the first picture. That should work.

I'm new at all this but a know some basic things about PS. The one thing I don't understand is the step 4 [eye]. I know how to put a mask but when I use brush nothing happens at all in the white square (it stays white) but in the first one I see black shapes (the ones you have in the white square). Actually I don't understand the whole purpose of those vector masks. I would really appreciate ur help.
Tutorial is gr8 btw!

The following file:

Texture 1 - Green by Leonbidon

gives an error saying that I am not allowed to access it. Might want to use a different one. I will.
