A full-fledged camera it's not

My 35mm camera and lenses came along to Saturday night's (Nov. 3, 2007) Bon Jovi concert at the Prudential Center in Newark NJ, but it never left our car. Security would not allow standard cameras inside -- only pocket-sized digitals -- so I was relegated to taking pictures using my cell phone.

Back on May 23 (2007) Cognisign -- a San Francisco-based company that specializes in image search technology -- launched a Beta version of its new website, xcavator.net. Instead of relying solely on tags and other embedded metadata to find images that stock photo buyers want, xcavator employs an image recognition engine that can differentiate between colors, shapes and spatial relationships.

Given time, it may even find a photo which contains a face that looks like yours. However it looks.

You may need a government permit and proof of insurance to take photographs or set up a location shoot in New York City, under a proprosal being considered by city administrators.

A photo contest from the BBC

That venerable news gathering organization, the BBC, is again conducting its annual summer photography competition in search of what it calls the "Photographer of the Year 2007." The contest has five themed categories, and is already under way. The deadline for the first category has passed, but entries for four others are open over selected dates through Sept. 16.

RedBubble, a beta website that sells photo printing and framing services and offers a venue for photographers to sell their own works, is launching itself by promoting a photo contest with $10,000 in prizes.

Selectively changing colors in a photo

Camera and photo supply retailer Adorama, based in New York City, on Friday (July 6, 2007) distributed an excellent and well-illustrated Photoshop CS3 tutorial on selectively changing colors within a photograph. As an example, it re-colors a shirt from pale blue to tan, without affecting other colors in the image.
