Death Of The Printed Photo?

posted by RestorePS, May 20, 2013 12:30 PM — 2 comments

The undoubted advantage of digital photography is the ability to instantly see the results and take more photos if required. How many of us take three or four shots of the same image just because we can? The truth is we all do it and why not. Long gone are the days of taking a photo and waiting weeks to use up the film and have the prints developed. We now live in an instant world where mistakes can be rectified at the touch of a button.

But where does the humble photo print fit in to this? The bottom line is I don't think we're printing enough. I'm a photo restorer so photo prints aren't really my area and I have no personal axe to grind or gain but my angle is this. All those hundreds of photos we have stored on our various storage devices. All those wonderful pictures of family, friends and picturesque scenes. All stored away never to see the light of day.

And can those storage devices be trusted? What if they suddenly stop working, what then happens to all those cherished moments?

It's definitely a change in attitude for me personally but my new focus is to print as many of the important photos as I can and preserve them correctly in photo albums. Yes it's a bit old school and yes it takes up space but at the end of the day I have a physical memento of those moments that matter the most to me and I feel far happier that that real photo will endure and be valuable to my family when I'm long gone than a few hundred digital images they may never find.

Thoughts?
