I have seen this kind of sunset only two other times, with that strange beam of light in the middle. I only slightly turned up the the contrast.

"It is a solar pillar, and occurs when the sun at or very near to the horizon reflects light off of ice crystals with near horizontal parallel planar surfaces. The phenomenon can occur with the moon as well, and even occasionally from terrestrial sources such as streetlights low lying along the horizon. Nice images! Would make a nice submission to the Earth Science Picture of the Day!"
