These photos were taken during a short trip to Rangoon in 2001. I hope that they show both the difficulty of Burmese life under a military dictatorship and the persistent humanity despite it. The woman in this photo is sticking gold leaf to the male fertility statue at one of the largest pagodas in Rangoon. I wish to this day I had taken a photo of the female fertility statue nearby because the relative lack of gold leaf applied to it illustrated the social importance still placed on having sons

While the people of the country live in desperate poverty, the military junta has plowed an extraordinary amount of the country's wealth into renovating and building elaborately ornamented temples and pagodas, such as this one in Central Rangoon. Written permission to use this photo is required because I do not want my photos of Rangoon to be used to promote tourism there
