DESCRIPTION

Desert adapted elephants walk and eat the scrub brush and tress of the northwestern region of the Namib Desert known as ‘Damaraland’, one of the most scenic wilderness areas in Namibia. This harsh tribal wilderness area runs parallel to the Skeleton Coast National Park, and is home to a small population of desert-adapted elephants. Desert adapted elephants are known for their smaller herds; straight, thin and smaller tusks; smaller bodies, longer legs and larger feet than their East African cousins. There is a debate amongst zoologists and scientists as to whether these desert dwelling animals should be classified as a different species of Elephant.
