Low hairless, tuberous-rooted, perennial. Leaves basal, circular in outline, palmately-lobed, shiny green. Flowers solitary, nodding in bud, buttercup-like, yellow, 20-30mm, usually with 6 oval sepals. Fruit a cluster of about 6 follicles. Habitat: Woods and Scrub, in moist humus-rich soils. Flowering Season: January-March. Indigenous: South Europe and West Asia. Naturalized in Britain, Belgium. Holland, France and Germany. Widely cultivated in Gardens. In the Netherlands cultivated since the Seventeenth Century and to be seen in Garden and Parks (Stins).
