Rowing for recreation and sport on the Schuylkill River dates back to the early 1700's. These are some of the boat clubs, which, along with others, comprise the "Schuylkill Navy". The Schuylkill Navy was founded in 1858, in part to regulate amateur sports in Philadelphia. The Penn Athletic Club has been prominent in rowing in Philadelphia since the early 1900's. In 1822, a dam was built across the Schuylkill River, adjacent to the Fairmount Water Works,(See photo #914390 ) to regulate the flow of water for the Works. This changed the character of the Schuylkill River. It was no longer a tidal waterway and conditions for rowing became ideal. An exstensive history of the Schuylkill Navy, the Penn Athletic Club,Boat House Row and rowing on the Schuylkill River, can be found on the internet at Philadelphia Pennsylvania Schuylkill Boat House Row
